Childrenʻs Bible Stories by Christopher Warren Baker

Enjoy this series of Bible stories written for children to learn Jesusʻs story. Book 6 tells how the Barnyard Gang learned about Jesus rising from the Dead.

(Caution for Parents: Due to the graphic nature of Jesus’ death, please read ahead to see if your child is ready to be exposed to these realities.)

In our last episode of the Barnyard Gang, we learned that Jesus had died on the cross and that everyone watching was very sad and crying. Jesus, who claimed to be the King of the Jews, was gone, and so were all the hopes and dreams of those who loved Him. Many people who saw what happened returned home and some of the women who followed Jesus from Galilee stood far away and watched.

“Boss, should we pack up and leave for home?” said Isaiah.

“Let me first talk to Sarah and then I’ll decide what we should do,” said Boss.

(Boss and Sarah talk privately…)

“Boss, what just happened to Jesus is terrible! Could we stay a little longer so I can go with the women and help them?” asked Sarah.

“Yes, Sarah, you go with them and I’ll see if there is anything we can do for Jesus’ disciples,” said Boss.

Joseph of Arimathea

(“A man from the Jewish town of Arimathea was there, too. His name was Joseph. He was a good, religious man. He wanted the kingdom of God to come. Joseph was a member of the Jewish council, but he had not agreed when the other leaders decided to kill Jesus.”)1

“That man talking to the guards is Joseph of Arimathea; he’s on the Jewish council. I heard he’s a good religious man and didn’t want Jesus killed,” said Isaiah.

“Joseph of Arimathea! Hmm…now what’s he up to?” thought Boss.

(“A man named Joseph from Arimathea asked Pilate (the Roman Governor) if he could take the body of Jesus. (Joseph was a secret follower of Jesus because he was afraid of the Jews.) Pilate gave his permission. So, Joseph came and took Jesus’ body away.”)2

“Boss, I overheard the guards talking about how Pilate3 ordered them to give Jesus’ body to Joseph,” said Simon.

Jesus’ body is moved to the tomb

“Look! Joseph and another man are taking Jesus down from the cross and wrapping Him in cloth strips and now they’re taking Him away,” said Isaiah.

“Where do you suppose Joseph is taking Jesus?” asked Simon.

“I don’t know, but we’re going to find out! Let’s follow them. Isaiah, get the animals ready,” said Boss.

“We’re coming with you!” said Simon.

“Are you and your sons up for that, Simon? It could be dangerous following a member of the Jewish council,” said Boss.

“I’ve carried Jesus’ cross for Him so there’s nothing I won’t do to protect His good name,” said Simon.

(Sarah went with the women. Boss, Isaiah, Simon, and his sons, along with Dan, Zeke, Hurricane and Tornado, all followed Joseph of Arimathea.)

(…Then Joseph put Jesus’ body in a tomb that was cut in a wall of rock. This tomb had never been used before. This was late on Preparation Day.4” When the sun went down, the Sabbath day would begin.)5

(Joseph of Arimathea and an unknown man took Jesus’ body and carried Him to the tomb a short distance from where He was crucified. Boss and his friends followed Joseph to the tomb. Mary (Jesus’ mother), Mary Magdalene, Mary (wife of Clopas), and the other women, including Sarah, also followed Joseph to the tomb.)

“Look Boss, Joseph and that other man are putting Jesus’ body into a tomb cut into the rock wall,” said Isaiah.

“Yes, and I see the women also followed Joseph,” said Boss.

“There’s nothing to worry about! Joseph is doing a good thing by putting Jesus’ body in the tomb, and once they roll that big stone in front of the entrance, no one can get inside,” said Simon.

“It sure would take a few strong men to roll that big stone; that’s for sure,” said Isaiah.

(The Barnyard Gang were also watching and listening…)

“Hey guys, why do you think humans sometimes put people who have died into tombs?” asked Zeke.

“I think it’s because they don’t want people coming in and abusing (harming) the dead person’s body or stealing some important things left inside the tomb,” said Dan.

“Wild animals could also abuse (harm) the body,” said Zeke.

“Well, one thing’s for sure—once that big stone blocks the entrance, no one’s getting in or out!” said Dan.

“Whoa…Dan, did you say out?? The person who’s dead inside certainly couldn’t get out!” laughed Tornado.

“It would take at least two big strong men to roll that stone away. But I know a big strong horse that could do it,” smiled Hurricane.

(The heavy stone was rolled into place by Joseph and the unknown man. Now, the tomb was closed and no one could get inside.)

“Boss, where are you going?” asked Isaiah.

“I’m going to talk to Joseph before he leaves and thank him for putting Jesus safely inside the tomb,” said Boss.

“Boss, please thank him for me and my boys,” said Simon.

“Will do,” yelled Boss, while walking towards the tomb.

(Boss meets with Joseph and the unknown man by the tomb. He had a long talk with both of them and then returned to Isaiah and Simon…)

“What did Joseph and that other man tell you, Boss?” asked Simon.

“Joseph told me that it was his tomb, and he wanted Jesus to be placed there, because it’s never been used before. Joseph and his friend brought spices, myrrh, and aloes6 and put them on the linen cloth that they wrapped around Jesus,” said Boss.

“Who was that other man?” asked Isaiah.

“Well, that man is a Pharisee [Jewish leader] and a friend of Joseph. His name is Nicodemus and he told me an unbelievable story! He met secretly with Jesus in the dark of night.7 You see, he didn’t want the Jewish leaders to know that he was meeting with Jesus.”

(All the animals started listening now!)

Being Born Again

Boss continued, “Nicodemus said, “Teacher we know that you are a teacher sent by God. No one can do the miracles you do unless God is with Him.8 Then Jesus said: “I tell you the truth! Unless you are born-again you cannot be in God’s kingdom.”9 Nicodemus then asked, “But if a man is already old, how can he be born again? He cannot enter his mother’s body again? So, how can he be born a second time?”’ 10

“Nicodemus is right! You can’t go back into your mother’s body and be born again,” said Isaiah.

“Isaiah, listen to Jesus’ answer! He told Nicodemus, ‘you don’t understand, you must be born from above by God.’ Jesus wasn’t talking about a physical birth; He’s talking about a spiritual birth,”’ said Boss.

Boss continued, “I know it’s hard to understand, but Jesus told Nicodemus: ‘A person’s body is born from his human parents. But a person’s spiritual life is born from (God’s) Spirit,’”11 said Boss.

“Now, I’m really confused about this ‘being born again,’ stuff!’” said Simon.

“I really don’t understand it either. We’ll just have to believe that what Jesus told Nicodemus is true, and maybe someday we’ll understand,” said Boss.

“Boss, now that Jesus is safely in the tomb, can we go back home to Bethlehem?” asked Isaiah.

“Not just yet, Isaiah! Maybe we’ll just stay another few days to see what happens. I want to go be with the disciples. Surely they must be afraid and worried. You see, they thought Jesus was the Jewish Messiah and hoped He would rescue the Jewish people from the Romans who rule over us,” said Boss.

“Humm…I can’t stop thinking about what Jesus told His disciples: that He would be killed and in three days He would rise from death!12

Surely that couldn’t happen and even if it could, how would He get out of the tomb with that big stone blocking the entrance?” thought Boss.

(Boss, Isaiah, Simon, and his sons, Alexander and Rufus, went to be with the disciples who were staying in a locked room. The animals, Zeke, Dan, Hurricane and Tornado, were tied to a post close to the room. Sarah went with Mary and the other women to their homes. Night passed and morning came…)

(Very early on the first day of the week—Sunday—the women went to the tomb!!!)

(“Very early on the first day of the week, the women came to the tomb where Jesus’ body was laid. They brought the spices they had prepared. They found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance of the tomb. They went in, but they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, two men in shining clothes suddenly stood beside them.

The women were very afraid; they bowed their heads to the ground. The men said to the women, “Why are you looking for a living person here? This is a place for the dead. Jesus is not here. He has risen from death! Do you remember what he said in Galilee? He said that the Son of Man (Jesus) must be given to evil men, be killed on a cross, and rise from death on the third day.”Then the women remembered what Jesus had said.

The women left the tomb and told all these things to the eleven apostles and the other followers. These women were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and some other women (Sarah, Boss’s wife, was one of the other women). The women told the apostles everything that had happened at the tomb. But they did not believe the women. It sounded like nonsense. But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. He looked in, but he saw only the cloth that Jesus’ body had been wrapped in. Peter went away to be alone, wondering about what had happened.)13

(Sarah talked with Boss. Isaiah, Simon, and even the animals listened…)

“Boss, its true!! I went with the women who were going to put sweet spices on Jesus’ body and we found the tomb was already open and His body was gone! Suddenly, two men appeared in bright shining clothes and said: “Why are you looking for a living person here? This is a place for the dead. Jesus is not here. He has risen from death! Do you remember what he said in Galilee? He said that the Son of Man (Jesus) must be given to evil men, be killed on a cross, and rise from death on the third day.” We were all very afraid! Boss, I believe those men were angels!” said Sarah.

“I believe you, Sarah, but did they say where Jesus had gone?” said Boss.

“Only that Jesus had risen from the dead. Doesn’t that mean He’s alive? asked Sarah.”

(The Barnyard Gang talked about what they just heard…)

“Do you think the angels moved that heavy stone away from the tomb?” said Dan.

“I think it would be easy for an angel to move that stone!” said Hurricane.

“I’m sure glad Jesus was raised from the dead, but where is He now? This is becoming a real mystery!” said Zeke.

(Everyone had more questions—where was Jesus???)

On the Road to Emmaus

(This road went from Jerusalem to the small town of Emmaus):

“That same day two of Jesus’ followers were going to a town named Emmaus. It is about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking about everything that had happened. While they were talking about these things, Jesus himself came near and began walking with them. (They were not allowed to recognize Jesus.) Then he said, “What are these things you are talking about while you walk?”

“The two followers stopped. Their faces were very sad. The one named Cleopas answered, “You must be the only one in Jerusalem who does not know what just happened there.”Jesus said to them, “What are you talking about?”

“The followers said, “It is about Jesus of Nazareth. He was a prophet from God to all the people. He said and did many powerful things. Our leaders and the leading priests gave him up to be judged and killed. They nailed him to a cross. But we were hoping that he would free the Jews. It is now the third day since this happened. And today some women among us told us some amazing things. Early this morning they went to the tomb, but they did not find his body there. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels. The angels said that Jesus was alive! So, some of our group went to the tomb, too. They found it just as the women said, but they did not see Jesus.”

“Then Jesus said to them, “You are foolish and slow to realize what is true. You should believe everything the prophets (old wise men telling what will happen in the future) said. They said that the Christ must suffer these things before he enters his glory.” Then Jesus began to explain everything that had been written about himself in the Scriptures. He started with Moses, and then he talked about what all the prophets had said about him.”

“They came near the town of Emmaus, and Jesus acted as if he did not plan to stop there. But they begged him, “Stay with us. It is late; it is almost night.” So, he went in to stay with them.”

“Jesus sat down with them and took some bread. He gave thanks for the food and divided it. Then he gave it to them. And then, they were allowed to recognize Jesus. But when they saw who he was, he disappeared. They said to each other, “When Jesus talked to us on the road, it felt like a fire burning in us. It was exciting when he explained the true meaning of the Scriptures.”

“So, the two followers got up at once and went back to Jerusalem. There they found the 11 apostles and others gathered. They were saying, “The Lord really has risen from death! He showed himself to Simon (Peter).”

“Then the two followers told what had happened on the road. They talked about how they recognized Jesus when he divided the bread.”14

“These guys are saying the same thing the women said—Jesus is alive!” said Boss.

“Everyone is whispering the same question. Where is Jesus? Why doesn’t He show Himself to us?” said Isaiah.

Jesus Appears to His Followers:

“While the two followers were telling their story about how they met Jesus, SUDDENLY, Jesus Himself, stood among those gathered. He said to them, “Peace be with you.” They were all fearful and terrified. They thought they were seeing a ghost. But Jesus said, “Why are you troubled? Why do you doubt what you see? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I, myself! Touch me. You can see that I have a living body; a ghost does not have a body like this.”15

“The door was locked, so how did He get in? I can’t believe it! This is amazing!”  said Isaiah.

“The disciples are touching Him to see if He is real and not a ghost!” said Boss.

(The animals outside could hear Jesus talking—they were amazed!)

“Zeke, we are standing right outside that locked door and we didn’t see Jesus go through the door. And now He’s somehow inside talking to the disciples and His friends.” said Dan.

“I’ll never forget Jesus’ voice! I can still remember Him while He was riding on my back through the gate into Jerusalem. He was talking to all the people who were yelling: ‘Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest.’ It’s really Jesus, isn’t it? It’s hard to believe, but it’s true—He’s alive!” shouted Zeke.

“We saw Jesus’ dead body going into the tomb, and now we’re hearing Him talking with His friends. Hurricane, you and I have seen a lot of amazing things while we were racing on the race track, but nothing even compares to this!” said Tornado.

“Yep, everything we heard about Jesus is true. Jesus said He would rise from the dead, and He has!” said Hurricane.

Back inside the room:

“After Jesus said this, He showed them His hands and feet. The followers were amazed and very happy. They still couldn’t believe it. Jesus said to them, “Do you have any food here?” They gave Him a piece of cooked fish. While the followers watched, Jesus took the fish and ate it.”16

“Boss, look at Jesus’ hands and feet. They have deep wounds—healed scars.” Unreal!” said Simon.

“Would you look at that? Now, Jesus is eating food just like a normal person,” said Isaiah.

(Boss, Isaiah, Simon and his two boys, the women, and the disciples all stood back, watching in amazement as Jesus ate.)

“Jesus said to them, “Remember when I was with you before? I said that everything written about me must happen—everything in the law of Moses, the books of the prophets, and the Psalms.”17

“Then Jesus opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He said to them, “It is written that the Christ would be killed and rise from death on the third day. You saw these things happen—you are (My) witnesses. You must tell people to change their hearts and lives. If they do this, their sins will be forgiven. You must start at Jerusalem and preach these things in my name to all nations.”18

“Boss, I can now understand the hard things written in the Bible long ago about Jesus. How did He do that?” asked Isaiah.

“It’s another miracle from Jesus. Just think about it—Jesus just helped us understand the old things said about Him in the Bible—which we couldn’t understand before. Amazing!” said Boss.

Jesus tells of the power from Heaven.

“Listen! My Father has promised you something; I will send it to you. But you must stay in Jerusalem until you have received that power from heaven.”19

“What is this power from heaven Jesus is talking about, Boss?” asked Simon.

“I don’t know, but I think we are going to find out,” said Boss.

Jesus Goes to Heaven.

“Isaiah! Get the animals ready. We’re going to follow Jesus,” said Boss.

“Yes sir! I’m getting them ready right now,” said Isaiah.

“Jesus led his followers out of Jerusalem, almost to Bethany on the Mount of Olives.20

(Boss, Isaiah, Simon his two sons, Sarah, the animals, and Jesus’ followers all followed Him to Bethany; a short distance from Jerusalem. When they arrived at Bethany everyone was watching Jesus.)

“Jesus raised His hands and blessed them. While He was blessing them, He was separated from them and carried into heaven.”21

Jesus rises from the dead

“Look! Jesus is floating up into the clouds!” said Simon.

“Is this some kind of trick?” asked Isaiah.

“A cloud hid Jesus from their sight. As He was going, they were looking into the sky. Suddenly, two men wearing white clothes stood beside them. They said, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing here looking into the sky? You saw Jesus taken away from you into heaven. He will come back in the same way you saw him go.”22

“That was no trick Isaiah. It was a miracle from God,” said Boss.

“Oh my! Those men in white look just like the two angels that were at the tomb when Jesus disappeared,” said Sarah.

(The animals couldn’t believe their eyes)

“I can’t wait to tell the gang back at the barn that Jesus died on the cross and came back to life, and was even eating fish!” said Dan.

“Then we watched Him float up into the clouds and into heaven. They surely won’t believe it—especially Lizzy,” said Zeke.

“I know who will believe it!” said Hurricane.

“Everyone yelled, LEAH!!!”

“Yep…you guessed it. Leah has strong faith in Jesus,” said Hurricane.

Jesus was now in heaven and He’s going to send power from heaven to the disciples and everyone who believes in Him.

“Boss, are we going back to Jerusalem and wait for Jesus’ power to come on us?” asked Sarah.

“Yes, but first we need to send feed and supplies back to the Inn for the animals,” answered Boss.

“Isaiah, saddle up Hurricane and Tornado, go to the Feed Store, pick up the supplies and ride back to the Inn. Tell the workers at the Inn that Boss and Sarah will be staying in Jerusalem a little while longer.  Then come back here to Jerusalem and wait with us for the power that Jesus promised,” said Boss.

Jesus is now in heaven and all His disciples are waiting in Jerusalem for the power He promised! Watch for the next episode in Book 7. Jesus sends power from heaven to everyone who believes in Him.

Helping Your Child Understand the Uniqueness of Jesus

Questions for Book 6 Doc 1

The Barnyard Gang helps children better understand who Jesus is and His purpose for coming to earth. The events in this story are centered around Jesus’ unique life leading to His death on the cross. Don’t be afraid to say, “I don’t know,” when your child asks difficult questions. Enjoy this time together as you read the story—and remember, no one knows it all. Use this opportunity as a discovery time where you and your child can learn together. When you have finished reading the story, spend time discussing it together. Ask them about their favorite part of the story and their favorite characters. Ask them if there is anything they didn’t understand. Something that may need explaining is why Jesus had to go to the cross.

The following thoughts will help you on that journey of discovery:

Discovering with Your Child

1 How did Jesus die?
If you said He died on a cross, you are correct.

Preparation Day. It was the Jewish Sabbath day (the day Jews worship God). That was a hard one and if you got it right, you did excellent.

12 Nicodemus went to see Jesus late at night. What did Jesus tell him?
Jesus told him you must be ‘born again’ or you cannot enter God’s kingdom (heaven).

13 Did Nicodemus understand what it meant to be ‘born again’?
No. Jesus explained that it was not a physical birth, but it was a spiritual birth from God. If you find that hard to understand, you are not alone. Everyone has a hard time understanding it. However, we know it’s true. Why? Because Jesus tells us it’s true.

14 What did the women find at the tomb on the first day of the week (Sunday)?
The stone that blocked the entrance was gone, the tomb was open, and Jesus was gone.

15 Who then appeared in the tomb?

30 Suddenly, Jesus appeared to His disciples. What did He say to the disciples?
“Peace be with you.”

31 What were the disciples feeling?
They were terrified and fearful.

32 Jesus said “why are you troubled?”

He was going to send them power from heaven.

39 Do you think you might know what that power was?
______________.

40 Where did Jesus lead His followers?
Out of Jerusalem almost to Bethany.

41 What did Jesus do there?
He raised His hands and blessed them.

42 What happened next?
He was carried up into heaven.

43 Then who appeared?
Two men in white clothes appeared.

44 What did they say?
“Men of Galilee why are you standing here looking into the sky? Jesus was taken into heaven.
